The use of thermal areas does have some interesting consequences, though. For example, when we were tracking Rosie’s path, we found the remains of a dead elk.
The skull showed that the animal’s teeth had been severely decayed. Some teeth were darker than others, while others were worn to the gum line.
I assumed the animal must have been very old, but Bill and Fleur told me that the condition of an ungulate’s teeth isn’t an accurate way to estimate the animal’s age in this part of Yellowstone.
