Rhyolite is the underlying rock found in this area. Yellowstone National Park has been the site of three gigantic volcanic eruptions during the last two million years. Following these eruptions, lava continued to leak across the landscape for thousands of years. These lava flows eventually cooled and hardened into rhyolite.
