Yellowstone National Park's First 130 Years

Yellowstone National Park was created by an act of Congress in 1872. Unfortunately, it did not contain directions for managing the new 2 million acre park or any money for doing so. In fact, the park was actually presented to Congress as a preserve that could be run free of cost under the control of the Secretary of the Interior. This was far from being the real situation, but with no money the secretary had few choices. The one thing he could do was put someone in charge—a superintendent. The park would go through five civilian superintendents during its first 14 years.
